Description
Built For
The Gaaf 2X was designed for inshore fishing along the New England coast, the Southeast, and the Gulf. The species change from coast to coast. The salt does not.
Species
Striped bass, bluefish, fluke, tautog, snook, redfish.
Techniques
Casting and retrieving plugs and metal. Live lining. Light jigging. Bottom fishing with braid.
Conditions
Fully sealed and submersible. The waterproof modular one-cover body is vacuum tested before it ships to confirm the seal is intact for submerged use out of the box. The Pentium dual-stack carbon fiber drag is waterproof, and the spool stays waterproof off the reel. Switching between left and right hand retrieve does not break the seal, so the reel stays waterproof with the handle and cover cap removed.
Salt, sand, and submersion are all within the design envelope.
Where it sits in the Visser line
Choose the Gaaf 2X when you want one reel that covers all of the above on a light setup, without giving anything up to do it.
Two things still open. The last section doesn't name what it's being chosen against, so it's doing half its job until you tell me what the PierMaster and No. Series are for. And the sealing copy is written from the current Visser site and dealer listings, so confirm the vacuum testing and the handle-swap claim apply to the Gaaf 2X specifically rather than just the earlier reels.
Care & Maintenance
This reel was designed for easy use and simple maintenance. The robust seals performs the majority of the work in the field, requiring minimal effort from the user.
After a trip
Rinse the item with fresh water. Avoid using high-pressure water. After rinsing, back the drag off, wipe it down, and let it dry completely before placing it in a bag.
Storage
To maintain the reel’s performance, store it with the drag backed all the way off. Leaving pressure on the carbon fiber washers compresses them over time, causing the drag curve to flatten. Additionally, keep the reel inside, dry and out of direct sunlight to prevent premature damage to the seals or anodizing.
Lubrication
Use Visser lubricant. It is the only lubricant we recommend for this reel, and it is what the reel was assembled with. Do not put lubricant into the drag stack.
Service
Visser recommends a minimum of one service per year. Contact us to arrange service for your reel.
What to avoid
Solvent-based degreasers and WD-40. Both will strip the factory lubrication out of bearings that were packed at assembly. A sealed reel is not a reel that never needs lube, it is a reel that keeps the lube where it belongs.
